After a few festive days with friends visiting the Tri-States, I was momentarily tempted to skip the remainder of the July 4th celebrations.

However, the parade down historic Water Street in Shullsburg had an alluring pull. I've been overdue for a good old-fashioned smalltown Independence Day parade. Indeed, the charming southwestern Wisconsin town was prime to deliver a wholesome dose of Americana patriotism & hometown pride.

Shullsburg was founded in 1827 and is claimed to be the third oldest settlement in Wisconsin. Part of the Driftless Area, Shullsburg is known for its lead mining past and cheese making today.

Everyone was enjoying the overcast and cool morning with the parade going by when the first rain drops began to fall. But few seemed deterred, although several did begin to take cover under umbrellas and business awnings.

When the raindrops began to fall faster and more frequently, I was sure the festivities would cease, but the Shullsburg Miner's Marching Band played on!

What's a parade without firetrucks? So this impressive classic 1936 red beauty arrived courtesy of the Cuba City, Wisconsin firefighters.

Handfuls of candy were tossed, and the kids were ready to gather whatever they could as the parade slowly flowed by.

All in all, it was a fantastic July 4th parade despite the excessive raindrops. As for me, seeing the community undeterred by a bit of rain was fun and refreshing.
