Rapper Talib Kweli Attacks Gene Simmons’ Remarks About the Death of Rap
Gene Simmons' prediction that "rap will die" earlier this week has naturally drawn fire from the hip-hop community. Talib Kweli, one of the most respected rappers around, is but one of the many who have taken the Kiss star to task on social media.
Yesterday (March 18), Kweli tweeted a screenshot of Simmons' comment, adding, "Would it be unfair of me to say I'm looking forward to the death [of] @genesimmons or nah? Chuck Berry s---s on Kiss."
In an interview railing against modern music, Simmons said, “Rap will die. Next year, 10 years from now, at some point, and then something else will come along [...] I am looking forward to the death of rap. I’m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking. A song, as far as I’m concerned, is by definition lyric and melody – or just melody.”
Simmons, who declared that "rock is finally dead" in 2014, later clarified his words by suggesting that it's the natural evolution of music. "Apparently pointing out that everything is cyclical - even music - is "controversial," he wrote. "People are very easily offended."
But Kweli didn't buy Simmons' answer, writing, "Pointing out everything is 'cyclical' is different than 'looking forward' to things dying. Do better Gene." He then posted lyrics from KRS-ONE's "Hip Hop Lives."
Kweli was far from the only person to take exception to Simmons' remarks. The Boombox found many anti-Simmons tweets by hip-hop fans, and we've embedded some of them below.
