Special Olympics Iowa has been a statewide program since 1968. The intended goal of Special Olympics is that; the joy of sports, can unlock hidden potential and transform not just the body but the mind as well. This sports as a catalyst approach includes programming on health, leadership, and education. The programs and events held for this community offers competitors the healthy choice of fighting inactivity, injustice, and intolerance of those with disabilities of any kind. The organization hopes that as a result of the athletes’ efforts, people with intellectual disabilities become accepted and valued members of their respective communities; leading to a more inclusive and accepting society. Athletes benefit from competing as well, gaining improved physical fitness and motor skills, higher self-confidence, a positive self-image, and Lifelong friendships. Special Olympics athletes carry these benefits into their daily lives and wherever they may go.
