Visit the Apple River Fort in Elizabeth, Illinois for an evening of eerie fun with a little excitement during Frights at the Fort! The Apple River Fort State Historic Site is nestled in the rolling hills of northwest Illinois, and the Apple River Fort stands tall, telling the epic historic tale of the 1832 Black Hawk War.

During this spook-tacular event you'll Learn about 1830s mourning and funeral customs and why it matters which way the deceased is carried out to the cemetery. Meet the ghost of John Gray and hear the story of his life and death on the Illinois frontier, all for free. Kids can also make the popular 19th century optical illusion toy—the Thaumatrope—and hear a selection of spooky stories around the fire.

The fort is open year-round May 1st to October 31st on Wednesday through Sunday
from 9am to 5pm. Then open November 1st to April 30th on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm. Their Visitor Center features knowledgeable staff, exhibits, a gift shop, and a short dramatic video. The reconstructed Fort is also open for self-guided tours.

Before evening falls and Fright at the Fort begins, join Fort staff on a guided walking tour through the Elizabeth City Cemetery at noon. You'll visit all the stones of those who helped to defend the Fort, as well as other notable figures including Civil War veterans, politicians, and more. Visitors will also learn how to "read" a headstone, decipher common iconography, how to safely "take a stone home," and basic techniques to headstone preservation.

Staff only asks that you please park carefully along South Apple River Road or on the paved roads in the cemetery! Avoid parking on the grass within the cemetery so you don't hit or drive over a grave. Again, the event is free, but donations are always appreciated.
