Iowa Drummer is Also the Host of a Hugely Popular Movie Podcast
This Saturday, October 22nd, Iowa's very own Pork Tornadoes will be back at the Q Casino's Q Showroom. They'll be playing five decades worth of music from four different genres, creating an electrifying atmosphere, and having fun on stage like they always do.
While many Iowans know and love The Pork Tornadoes, they might not realize that the band's drummer, Mike Schulte, and his talents extend beyond music. Schulte is not only the drummer and band's business manager; he's also the host of a hugely popular and growing movie podcast called The Confused Breakfast.
Schulte was kind enough to call in ahead of The Pork Tornadoes' concert not only to talk about the show, but also devote ample time to his podcast, which has exploded in popularity as of late.
Schulte started The Confused Breakfast during a period of dormancy brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. He needed to find a way to engage his creative side. So, he rounded up his friends, Sean and AJ, who became his co-hosts, and created a movie podcast predicated on rewatching/reliving childhood favorites from the 1980s and 1990s.
Schulte added the show is also about recalling the days when video rental stores dominated the landscape:
You think about these classic movies, it's not always so much the experiencing of watching [them] [....] a lot of times when you nostalgically look back at a movie like The Goonies, you think more about the people around you, the trip to the store, picking up the movie [....] and then taking it home, putting it in your VCR, and watching it with your brother, your family, your friends...
My conversation with Schulte dove deep into the lure of video rental stores and how streaming, while convenient, is a poor substitute for what was a quintessential experience for our childhoods. When you get two movie geeks on the phone, the conversation tends to segue between Bio-Dome to Blockbuster very quickly!
