A Raisin in the Sun, catch the National Players at UD Heritage Center
Throughout the year, the University of Dubuque Heritage center brings art, culture, and theater to the masses of Dubuque. This Saturday, March 26th at 7:30pm, is no different with the National Players presenting “A Raisin in the Sun”
A synopsis for the play from the National Players website states,
“The members of the Younger family dream bigger than the small house where they live on the south side of Chicago in the 1950s. When their deceased father’s insurance money comes through, those dreams might actually become reality. Walter Lee wants to run his own business and earn financial independence, but his sister Beneatha dreams of attending medical school. Meanwhile, their mother Lena wants to move them all to a bigger home in a white neighborhood. What will finally allow the Youngers to move up in the world, and who will have their dreams deferred? National Players is honored to portray this award-winning drama with a universal story about an African American family dealing with prejudice, history, and a world where everything changes.”
Of course, this play will be brought to life by a unique ensemble that brings innovative theater to communities around the United States. In fact, the National Players are now celebrating their 72nd season since their founding in 1949. The goal of each performance or workshop is to stimulate imagination and critical thinking, while presenting classic plays in refreshed scenarios for modern audiences. They also offer post-show discussions for the audience’s benefit.
To say this group is experienced is an understatement. The National Players have performed across the US (41 states to be exact); in the White House; even for the American military throughout Europe, Asia, and the Arctic Circle. The National Players have brought literature to life for almost three million people with a commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement.
In addition to performances and a rigorous tour and practice schedule, the National Players do offer educational theatre workshops for all ages. Each member is also a skilled teaching artist; and can cater workshops to the age, skills, and abilities of the students being instructed. Small Group Workshops work best (under 30 people), and last for at least 45 minutes. You can find more information on the National Players at olneytheatre.org/national-players.
