Wisconsin Crossbow Deer Season Starts Saturday, September 17

As Fall Hunting gets underway, reviewing the latest safety information provided by the Department of Natural Resources is always helpful.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds deer hunters that their first opportunity to pursue a buck this fall is fast approaching.

The DNR reminds all outdoor and hunting enthusiasts that safety is an essential part of hunting.

The DNR urges hunters to review the four essential rules of safety (TAB-K) to keep the season memorable yet safe:

• Handle every crossbow like it's loaded
• Always point the crossbow in a safe direction.
• Be sure of your target and what is before and beyond it.
• Finally, keep your finger outside the crossbow trigger guard or archery release until ready to shoot.

Additionally, when hunting during the archery or crossbow seasons, The DNR wants you to remember the following safety tips:

•  Immediately after cocking, always check to ensure your bow is safe.
• Always use bolts/arrows recommended by the manufacturer.
• Protect yourself and the arrow points with a covered arrow quiver.
• The safest way to carry, transport, and raise or lower a crossbow from a stand is always to have the crossbow un-cocked.
• The safest way to un-cock a crossbow is to fire a bolt into a safe target. 
• Never fire the bow or crossbow without firing an arrow or bolt from it (known as "dry firing").
• Always know your range for accuracy.

The Wisconsin DNR also warns that tree stand incidents are a leading cause of injury to hunters. Therefore, hunters should always wear a safety harness. In addition, always use three points of contact when going into or out of the stand.

Hunters should use a haul line to bring the unloaded bow or crossbow into a stand. Finally, be sure to let someone know where you will hunt and when you expect to return.
