‘Straight Outta Compton’ Trailer: Parental Discretion Is Advised
The new Straight Outta Compton trailer is here and it doesn’t look like what you’d expect. If you went back in time and told the members of the highly controversial hip-hop group N.W.A. that they would one day be the subject of a glossy, mainstream biopic, they probably wouldn’t believe you. But here we are: the “world’s most dangerous group” has its own Hollywood movie now.
And that’s not necessarily a bad thing! It’s just strange to see this particular group in a movie that seemingly follows the typical biopic template in just about every way. The musical genres may be completely different, but Straight Outta Compton looks like it will share DNA with the likes of Walk the Line and Ray. (All of the usual Walk Hard jokes will also apply.)
Also strange: watching how the trailer finds ways to cut around the vast majority of the group’s lyrics since almost every one of their songs couldn’t be put in a trailer with an “approved for all audiences” message. Thankfully, we already have a red band trailer that actually showcases the music in this musical biopic.
Straight Outta Compton opens in theaters on April 13.
