Sting's 57th & 9th tour is off and running after a performance at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom last night that included solo hits, Police classics and even a cover of David Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes."

The Vancouver show was just the first in a lengthy series of dates Sting has plotted in support of his recent 57th & 9th LP, which marks a return to straightforward rock style after an extended period in which he focused on recordings he's referred to as "esoteric" — like his collection of lute songs, 2006's Songs From the Labyrinth, or his stage musical The Last Ship.

The Vancouver Sun found Sting in fine form on opening night, noting that he joined support act the Last Bandoleros during their set, and later led the crowd through a performance that, a couple of off moments notwithstanding, added up to a "lockstep-without-stiffness show."

Sting moves on to Portland, Ore., tonight, and will remain in North America through mid-March, after which he's scheduled to begin the European leg of the 57th & 9th tour. Visit his official site for full details and ticketing information.
