Food is one of the strongest features in a community. Its presence ignites a bond between people. It's the perfect conduit for any social setting. It's no wonder why St. Catherine Parish makes it an integral part of their yearly schedule.

It's that time of year again. St. Catherine Parish is having their annual "Chicken Dinner" next month! This year, the event is happening at Happy's Place on Sunday, April 10th 2022 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Roger Manders, the Chairperson of the Dinner Committee, was kind enough to chat with me for a few minutes on the phone about the event.

Throughout the call, he kept hitting on one word: "togetherness." This is an event made possible by "everybody pitching in and helping," he made sure to note. The parishioners at St. Catherine's have worked dutifully to make this event possible. Manders stated how he's received compliments in the past regarding the volume of volunteers who work to make the event possible.

Going back to the food, this year's Chicken Dinner is sure to have a lot of it! The Facebook event page makes note of a handful of offerings sure to satisfy any palette: Kalmes chicken, mashed potatoes, homemade German potato salad, macaroni salad, fruit salad, coleslaw, dinner rolls, and dessert! Oh, and you can't forget hot dogs for the kids either!

Germane to the delicious food is a raffle, which comes together thanks in large to parishioner contributions. Manders said a "wheelbarrow of kid toys" will be one of the features at this year's event. The style of raffle is familiar as well: tickets are dropped into a bin in front of the item and drawn later on.

"There's also a country store featuring baked goods, craft articles, and goods for hobbyists," Manders added.

If you're stuck on the desserts (who could blame you), Manders says pies and cookies are likely to be among the smorgasbord of offerings!

Tickets for St. Catherine Parish's Chicken Dinner are available in advance at Happy's Place (2323 Rockdale Rd in Dubuque) for $9.50, or $10 at the door (kids 6-12 can get in for $4). In addition, carry out and drive-up orders ($10.50) are available too.

You can also listen to the Y105 Morning Show all this week and next for your chance to win tickets to the annual Chicken Dinner!

Again, more information can be found on the event's Facebook page!
