McGregor Mainstay Brewery and Restaurant Sold: Temporarily Closing
On my many travels across Iowa's driftless region, I have been able to explore not only the amazing natural features of our beautiful state, but also the bounty of food and beverages that it holds as well. Let's put it this way: "Tommy likes to eat!" And eat, I do. After a long day hiking and exploring, you've got to take in the local scene, and that's why I am both bummed and optimistic about one of my favorite stops, the last time I visited Yellow River State Forest. Well, for a killer bite and brew, you've got a few days left to explore this hidden gem before it closes temporarily.
Old Man River Brewery has been a staple in downtown McGregor for years. Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building originally built by Joseph “Diamond Jo” Reynolds in 1855–56, it effortlessly blends historic charm with contemporary flair. On my last visit, I grabbed a flight of all seven brews on the menu. They ranged from crisp lagers to a smooth-hopped IPA (my fav), robust stouts, and a refreshing red ale.

The food was just as memorable: crispy, ranch-seasoned cheese curds, a hearty Reuben, my wife’s chicken wrap, and perfectly cooked sweet potato wedges. The atmosphere, complete with exposed brick, rustic wooden beams, and vintage river and brewing equipment, made the visit unique and fun.
Recently, the brewery shared a heartfelt update on their Facebook page:
So, while this beloved McGregor mainstay is closing temporarily for a transition, it’s not the end. Rather, it’s a fresh start. I'm not sure what we will see under new ownership. Will craft brews still be on the menu? Will their Ruben and cheese curds delight me again after a tough day hiking? Either way, I'm up for checking it out when it reopens. For those who haven’t yet experienced the original, or for anyone itching to relive a favorite meal and pint like me, a trip to McGregor is certainly in order before it closes on March 2nd, 2026.
