The end of the NFL season is here, and so begins the preparation for the proverbial big game party this weekend. You've got your nachos, pizza, smokies, and various snacks, along with your beverages of choice. For me personally, if both teams could lose, it would be an even better night. But I digress... hours of fun with friends and family, drinking and eating, and watching one of the two coast teams bite it to end the season: things can get out of hand fast. You know, one drink becomes two. Two, four. And before you know it, you're well past the limit to hop in your vehicle at the end of the night.

Let this article be your warning to wise up before your bad decisions come back to bite you in the butt. According to a recent press release from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office, the large STEP grant is continuing the force to run special driving impairment campaigns coinciding with large events and holidays, both nationally and locally. That step grant to the tune of $16,000,000 is enabling Illinois officers to run extra patrols from Friday, February 6th, through Monday, February 9th.

And remember, it's not just booze that'll get you a fine and maybe jail time. With the legalization of Marijuana in the state of Illinois, driving high is also a major issue that local police are watching for. I mean, what do we have now, like four dispensaries just across the bridge in East Dubuque? Honestly, no matter where you are, it's as easy as being prepared and using a little common sense.

  • It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. If you've taken medication that can cause drowsiness or slow reaction time, choose a sober ride.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
  • Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away. Have them stay or make a plan to get your friend home safely.
  • Always buckle up and follow road laws. You can still get a ticket for simply speeding or being distracted.

You know these suggestions go well beyond just Illinois, too? Listen, it's great to have fun. By all means, make sure to cut loose and enjoy watching one of the coast teams suffer this year. I know I will. But at the end of the night, keep it smart by keeping it safe. Designate that sober driver or stay put; your wallet and your reputation will thank you.
