Names Released in Dubuque Officer Involved Shooting, Two Dead
According to the Dubuque Police Department and a recent article in the Telegraph Herald, names have now been released after a deadly shooting early Sunday morning outside a downtown Dubuque bar. The incident unfolded quickly and is now under review by state and local investigators.
According to the Dubuque Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the shooting occurred at approximately 12:52 AM on January 4th, outside Odd Fellows Bar on Locust Street. A Dubuque police officer on routine patrol noticed a physical fight taking place on the sidewalk in front of the bar and stopped to intervene.

As the officer exited the patrol vehicle, investigators say 28-year-old Jaiondrick Lovely pulled out a handgun and shot 29-year-old Cory Wilson Jr. during the disturbance. The officer then fired his service weapon at Lovely, who ran inside the bar.
Police officers immediately provided medical assistance to Wilson at the scene before he was transported to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. Officers then searched the bar and located Lovely inside, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was treated by police at the scene and transported to UnityPoint Health–Finley Hospital. Both men were later pronounced dead at the hospitals.
The officer involved in the shooting was not injured. However, in keeping with department policy, they have been placed on critical incident leave while the case is reviewed.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer’s use of force, with assistance from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Department. Once that investigation is complete, findings will be forwarded to the Dubuque County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.
At the same time, the Dubuque Police Department is investigating the circumstances that led up to Wilson being shot. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident or what occurred beforehand to contact the Dubuque Police Department at 563-589-4415. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online through the department’s website.
Officials say additional details will be released once the investigation and review process is complete. As with any criminal investigation, all individuals involved are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
