Cake Mix Recall Impacts Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin

A nationwide recall of cake mix has increased to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) most serious classification, known as a Class I recall. The ongoing recall impacts three different types of cake mix, and being nationwide, that means Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin are included.

The recall was originally initiated back in December by B.C. Williams Bakery Service. Per Fox 8 News, the FDA warns that exposure to the impacted products could result in "serious adverse health consequences or death, particularly for individuals with milk allergies.

What are the Recalled Products?:

B.C. Williams Bakery Service initiated the recall due to an undisclosed milk allergen. Those with allergies to milk could see serious health issues as a result. The following products are being recalled, specifically those with the disclosed batch and lot numbers:

• Spice Cake Mix; 50 lb. multi-wall, kraft, poly-lined moisture-proof bags, Batch 221
• Bread and Roll Mix; 50 lb. multi-wall, kraft, poly-lined moisture proof bags, Lot #072225-217, Lot #072225-218, Lot #080325-200, Lot #080325-201, Lot #081625-203, Lot #081625-204, Lot #092225-222, Lot #092225-223, Lot #092225-224, Lot #092225-225, Lot #092225-226, Lot #092225-227, Lot #092225-228, Lot #101725-208, Lot #101725-209
• Swiss Chocolate Cake Mix; 50 lb. multi-wall, kraft, poly-lined moisture-proof bags, Lot #072925-220 and Lot #071825-36

What to Do if You Purchased the Recalled Product:

Check your pantries if you believe you might have purchased the impacted product. Those with severe allergies or certain food sensitivities are advised to dispose of or return any recalled product to the place of purchase. Seek medical help if symptoms occur after consumption.

Allergen labeling is incredibly important, as anyone with certain allergies will tell you. I'm allergic to tree nuts, so when it comes to any snack or dessert item, I have to inspect the label to make sure it's free from almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans, etc. It's not the most inconvenient allergy (being allergic to peanuts, I'd argue, is worse), but it comes with its own perils.
