Can Zach Johnson Turn Back the Clock at The Masters?
By golf standards, Cedar Rapids native Zach Johnson is an old man. He turned 50 in March, and has teed it up on the PGA Champions Tour. But make no mistake, this 'old man' still wants to play well this week at The Masters.
Zach Johnson, Iowa's Masters Champion
Back in 2007, Zach Johnson won The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia. It was an unexpected victory to say the least. The Des Moines Register reports that Johnson won with a total score of 289 or 1 over par. That mark is tied for the highest winning score in the history of the tournament! Here is Zach getting his green jacket from the previous year's champion Phil Mickelson.
But the recent years haven't been as kind to Johnson. The Register reports he missed the cut in 2021, 2022, and 2024. He tied for 34th in 2023. But last year, Zach was able to turn back the clock at Augusta. He finished the week at 5 under par, tied for eighth place. It was his best Masters finish since 2015.
Who Are the Favorites at the 2026 Masters?
While Rory McIlroy is the defending Masters champion, he isn't the favorite to repeat. The Registers reports that these are the players with the best odds to take home the green jacket this weekend.
- Scottie Scheffler - +490
- Jon Rahm - +910
- Bryson DeChambeau - +1075
- Rory McIlroy - +1175
In case you were wondering, Zach Johnson's odds of winning The Masters at age 50 is +55,000. So you're saying there's a chance?
The Masters is one of my favorite sporting events of the year. Yes, I love golf, but you just can't beat the scenery. The green grass, the blooming flowers, and the creek near Amen Corner.
The Masters will air on CBS, Paramount+, and The Golf Channel starting with the Par 3 contest later today.
