Man Walking Across U.S. Reaches Iowa on 3,100 Mile Journey
An extraordinary cross-country journey reached Iowa yesterday as an Orlando, Florida, man reached the midpoint of a massive coast-to-coast walk.
Camilo Ruiz, who documents his journey online under the handle "lowlifewreck," is currently trekking on foot from the beaches of Florida all the way to Seattle, Washington. Dubbed the "End the Rat Race Walk Across America," Ruiz's inspiring journey recently took him through the heart of the Midwest, crossing into the Hawkeye State with a goal to raise $10,000 to support single-parent families dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Camilo Ruiz Crosses into the Hawkeye State on Day 91

Reaching Iowa was no easy feat for Ruiz, who officially marked day 91 of his cross-country journey with one of his most grueling stretches yet. Traveling 27 miles from Powersville, Missouri, he battled thick mud, intense humidity, and non-stop rolling gravel hills while pushing a 100-pound supply cart.
The grueling trek ultimately brought him across his sixth state line into Iowa, leading him to Nine Eagles State Park. After battling the elements all day and walking into the dark, Ruiz had to find shelter from the rain, spending the night sleeping on a table underneath a park gazebo to stay dry.
Despite the exhausting and occasionally sketchy conditions of the trek, the border town of Lineville provided some classic Midwestern hospitality. Ruiz noted that locals were incredibly welcoming, including a resident named "Wild Bill" who gifted him a cowboy hat to mark the milestone.
