When I hear the term "Turkey Trot" the first thing that comes to mind is a turkey running from a hunter in camouflage.  I mean we all know from watching WKRP in Cinncinnati that turkeys can't fly.

But this story has less to do with turkeys and more to do with trotting...or in this case running. Online registration is now open for the 50th Annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot hosted by the Wahlert Catholic High School cross-country and track and field teams. This year's Turkey Trot will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, November 24, at Wahlert Catholic High School, 2005 Kane Street, Dubuque.

Participants age six and older may choose from a 2.5-mile or 5-mile course. The entry fee is $15 and long-sleeved t-shirts are available for $20 through the online registration website.

Here is this year's route:

2.5 mile:

  1. Starting in front of Mazzuchelli Catholic Middle School, head east on Kane Street;
  2. Turn left on Balboa Drive;
  3. Left on N Grandview Avenue;
  4. Left on W 32nd Street;
  5. Left on Carter Road;
  6. Left on Kane Street and back to Wahlert.

5 mile: Repeat the 2.5-mile loop.

And what would a turkey trot be without a turkey? A certificate for a frozen turkey will be awarded to the first-place finisher in each age division.

For more information or to register online visit holyfamilydbq.org/turkeytrot. Online registration will remain open until the start of the race. In-person registration and bib/t-shirt pick-up will be held in the Wahlert Catholic High School gymnasium from 6:00–7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 23, and 7:30–8:45 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 24.
