Galena dog owners will soon have a new park to take their pets to. The City of Galena has received a $30,000 donation for a dog park project which has been in the works since 2018. The Sizzle Foundation, a local charitable organization, recently made that substantial donation. which still are being accepted for the park’s improvement and maintenance. A donation form is available on the city’s website or by contacting City Hall.

This donation is a huge step towards moving this project forward. Currently the Friends of Galena Dog Park have been running a go fund me page to secure donations for the creation of a free, community dog park in Galena. According to their post, “The goal is to create a space where dogs & their owners can burn off some energy & make new friends. The City of Galena has approved the creation of the dog park & has agreed to maintain it once it is built.  We are hoping to raise the necessary funds through grants, private donations, and other local fundraising events.”

In addition the post states that the estimated cost for Phase 1 of this project would be around $46,000. That price would include the creation of 3 separate fenced in play areas, a double gated entry, parking lot with handicap accessibility, water fountain, picnic tables, park benches & some landscaping. 3 acres of land for the dog park was donated in 2019. Total estimated cost for full completion of the project is around $75,000. According to a release, as of now more than 50 individual donations have been made totaling around $80,000. The cost of constructing the park was included on the budget for 2023; currently officials are finishing up designs with plans to begin construction this summer. Final plans include an additional fenced in play area, bringing the total to 4.
