Joke-stealing? That's no laughing matter to Emma Stone, the La La Land actress tells Rolling Stone as part of new interview published today (December 21).

Stone, whose performance as Mia in Damien Chazelle's latest film is earning rave reviews, reflected on her history in Hollywood as part of a chat with Jonah Weiner. She said there have blatant instances of her material being lifted by directors and producers, and seems pretty sure each has been fueled by sexism.

"There are times in the past, making a movie, when I’ve been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea,” she said. “I hesitate to make it about being a woman, but there have been times when I’ve improvised, they’ve laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star. Given my joke away."

And Stone's been subjected to the inverse, too — she says there have been times when directors haven't trusted her opinion to their own detriment.

“Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don’t think this line is gonna work,’ and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work we’ll cut it out,'" she said. "And they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!"
