The Fulton Elementary School in Dubuque will close its doors at the end of this current school year. The Dubuque Community School Board members unanimously approved the closure Monday (4/11), with a goal of consolidating the district’s middle schools from three into two by no later than the fall of 2026.

The school board had to make what they called a “hard decision due to budgetary reasons.” Fulton school has the smallest elementary in class size with 250 students. Those students will now be spread around to other schools in the district and all 60 teachers will keep their jobs. No board members were in favor of the closing, but had no choice due to budgetary constraints. The district staff proposed both moves (Closing and moving of students and staff) amidst concerns about lower then hoped for increases in state aid and the district’s declining unspent balance.

In other news from the district, Dubuque public schools are getting additional monetary support from over 20 local restaurants. They will donate a portion of their sales on April 21st. All part of the Dine Out/Take Out event, in conjunction with the Foundation for Dubuque Public Schools. The goal of the event is to encourage Dubuque families and local residents to visit participating restaurants “in an effort to drive business at local eateries and raise money for school projects and programs not covered by the school district’s annual budget,” a press release states.
