Department Store Closing Multiple Locations in Illinois
The last few months of 2024 saw a number of major retailers announce they'll be closing their doors. Big Lots shut down a couple different Iowa stores. Party City is going out of business, with stores in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin closing soon.
Now, another major clothing retailer is announcing that more than a couple dozen locations will be closing over the next several months. The retailer has publicly felt the pain of trying to adjust and recalibrate in an increasingly digital world, and as a consequence, several stores will be closing early into 2025.
The retailer is Kohl's, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, WI. Due to declining sales, all employees at 27 different stores were informed that they would be let go in lieu of the stores closing. A press release issued by the company last week claims the employees were offered "a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl's, per USA Today:
We always take these decisions very seriously. As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams. - Kohl's CEO Tom Kingsbury, per USA Today
Kohl's CEO Tom Kingsbury will also step down on January 15th, 2025. Ashley Buchanan, formerly CEO of Michaels Companies, will become the new CEO of the company.
While stores in Iowa and Wisconsin won't be affected by this round of closings, two Kohl's stores in Illinois will permanently close their doors by April 2025:
- Plainfield: 11860 South Route 59
- Spring Hill (West Dundee): 3000 Spring Hill Ring Road
Also closing is Kohl's e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, CA. The center has been in operation since 2010, and will close in May 2025.

Kohl's revealed in November 2024 that they expected sales to be down 7-8%. The company has more than 1,120 locations across the country.
