The Peeps marshmallow treat has been landing in Easter Baskets for nearly 70 years. According to the official Peeps website, Peeps have also become the #1 selling easter candy besides chocolate.

These colorful miniature marshmallows come from the same candy maker that produces Mike & Ikes and Hot Tamales.

New holiday shapes and flavors have also expanded the Peeps offerings with a recent announcement of a coffee-flavored Peeps.

Peeps have grown in popularity to the point that competitive art contests feature Peeps dioramas. Additionally, Peeps eating contests are also held. For example, the 2017 winner, Matt Stonie, ate 255 Peeps in five minutes.

We have no intention of eating that many Peeps. However, a recent grocery store trip had the Easter Peeps selling 2 for 1, so we decided to conduct our unscientific taste test. Judging from two categories of presentation and flavor on a scale of 1 (needs improvement) to 5 (excellent). Here are the results.

Yellow Peeps
Presentation: 5 - Bright, cheerful, and colorful
Flavor: 3 - It tastes like a coated marshmallow, so it didn't wow our taste buds. Overall Score - 8

Sparkley Wild Berry
Presentation: 4 - it oversells the sparkliness, but it does have character.
Flavor 5 - This Peeps got a berry flavor similar to breakfast cereal Lucky Charms but tangy. It definitely had a fun flavor profile.  Overall Score - 9

Hot Tamales Fierce Cinnamon

Presentation: 4 - the bright red neon color is fun, but the bird shape falls flat. Flavor: 3 - While there's a slight cinnamon flavor, these birds are anything but fierce. However, an actual box of Hot Tamales does sound good. Overall Score:7

Party Cake
Presentation: 3 There are tiny colorful sprinkles. And while the off-white base is excellent, it's missing that overall wow factor. Flavor: 2 - I had high hopes for this Peep, but it fell flat on the flavor meter. Mostly it tastes like a marshmallow with some added powder sugar. Overall Score: 5

Blue Peep
Presentation: 5 - The neon blue pops, and the bunny shape is fun. Flavor: 3 - No big or bold flavors with this Peep. Overall Score: 8
