The fabled Breitbach family restaurant will receive the Iowa Restaurant Association's top honor this fall. Iowa's Oldest Restaurant will be honored during the Iowa Restaurant Association's 27th annual Celebrating Excellence ceremony in November in Des Moines.

Breitbach's Country Dining was nominated for this year’s Top Iowa Restauranteur Award by a member of the association’s board of directors, which includes restaurant and bar owners, food purveyors, and other industry members across the State. The decision to recognize Mike & Cindy Breitbach as restaurateurs of the year was unanimous.

Mike and Cindy Breitbach, their family, staff, and the Balltown community have set the standard for restaurant hospitality, stood the test of time, and weathered the trials and tribulations, including two devastating fires. Still, perseverance continues to be recognized and rewarded, as evidenced by this recent announcement.

In a recent Telegraph Herald article, Cindy Breitbach shared, "This is a compliment to the people who choose to work with us and for us and have for so long because without them, it'd be impossible."

You'd be hard-pressed to find people in the restaurant business who have worked as hard or endured as much for their success and acclaim as Mike and Cindy Breitbach.

"Breitbach's represents a different time in America. It's a beautiful anachronism, the way people help each other out. It's like looking at a Norman Rockwell painting." - San Francisco Chronicle

The establishment started in 1852 and has been part of the Breitbach family since 1862, when it was purchased by Jacob Breitbach and passed down through the generations. Mike and Cindy took ownership in 1986, and that's when it truly began to garner fame as Iowa's Oldest Bar & Restaurant and the Dubuque County destination it is today.

The award-winning pork tenderloin, famous homestyle buffet, and amazing homemade pies are recognized far and wide for their quality. But what has put Breitbach's on the map has always been the hard work, high standard of service, and hospitality delivered by Mike & Cindy and their team.

Widely recognized for its quality and longevity, in 2009, the restaurant earned an America’s Classics Award from the James Beard Foundation.

The fall leaves will soon be at their peak colors. While that's a good enough reason to make a trip north along the Great River Road, there's another good excuse to make the trek to congratulate Breitbach's on this latest award.
