Crime has become a big problem in Illinois. Thieves are stealing anything and everything with absolutely no fear. You have to be on high alert all the time so you don't become a victim. It's gotten so big that it's kind of scary.

One of the worst kinds of crime in Illinois is stealing but more specifically porch pirates. Those are the thieves that take packages off of people's porches. There are so many consumers who shop online and have the products shipped to their homes. Everyone is at work so those boxes are sitting ducks for criminals.

Just think about how many packages get sent to homes in Chicago each day. That has attracted many thieves to the city because there's so much to steal. It's like hitting the lottery for porch pirates. They're walking away with thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.

Not surprisingly, Chicago is one of the worst places in the United States for porch pirates. It's ranked 3rd worst in the entire United States with over $262 million worth of stolen packages in 2024. Above the Windy City at number 2 is Philadelphia with over $450 million in stolen goods.

I guess it could be worse. New York City had a billion dollars worth of stolen packages so far this year. For the whole United States, over 120 million packages worth almost $16 million were grabbed by porch pirates.

With Christmas coming up quickly, make sure you keep an eye out for packages because if you leave them unattended they will end up getting stolen. That's a good way to ruin the holidays.
