It’s that time of year when the holiday spirit takes center stage, with the University of Dubuque’s beloved Tree Lighting Ceremony back for its 28th year on December 3rd. However, this year’s celebration is a little different, a little fresh, and a whole lot of heart as the community gathers around a newly planted blue spruce on Alumni Common, which used to be known as the Quad.

For decades, families, students, and friends have made this annual tradition a cornerstone of the season, coming together to enjoy the twinkle of lights, the crisp winter air, and that unmistakable sense of community that Dubuque does so well. The first blue spruce, fondly called “Bruce Spruce” after the person who started the holiday tradition, has long been a symbol of hope, faith, and togetherness. Over the years, this tree has grown alongside the University itself, standing tall as a beacon of love and the enduring spirit of the season. Check out last year's ceremony below.

This year, the ceremony will light a second blue spruce, newly planted in the spring. The tree represents not only the continuation of a cherished tradition but also the growth and future of the University community. Following the lighting, a reception in Blades Hall will give everyone a chance to gather, share a warm drink, and soak in the holiday cheer.

“The Tree Lighting Ceremony will carry on a beloved tradition manifested anew, proclaiming the significance of our Christian identity and Mission that continue to propel us faithfully into the future. Planted last spring, we will, as part of our annual tree lighting tradition, light the second blue spruce Christmas tree reaffirming our faith commitments and symbolizing the future growth we are invited into together in the University’s next chapter."

-Rev. James D. Gunn, DMin, dean of chapel and Edwin B. Lindsay Chaplain

The Tree Lighting Ceremony isn’t just for students or staff, it’s for anyone in the Dubuque community who wants to experience the magic of the season. For those who can’t make it in person, the celebration will be streamed live online, making it easy to join from home while still feeling connected to the UD family. The event takes place at 4 PM on Wednesday, December 3rd.
