The 17th Annual Galena Oktoberfest, was just held on October 6th, and was an unforgettable experience for families, friends, and furry companions alike. Taking place in historic Galena, the festival brought a delightful mix of German culture, fun activities, and delicious food and drink for all. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that this event had something for everyone.
Make sure to cross this bridge and take in the view on your way to Depot Park in Galena.
The day kicked off with the Midwest Health and Fitness Center's 5K Walk/Run, followed by live music from "The Goodtime Dutchmen" and the soothing sounds of the "New Glarus Alphorners." As the festival got underway, we enjoyed ice-cold beer from the Ein Prosit Tent and grabbed a bratwurst and apple cider donut while soaking in the lively Polka music.
What a crowd!
A major highlight was the Wiener Dog Races, where dogs of all ages competed in a fun, single-elimination format. And boy did it bring in the crowd! The races were full of excitement, and the parade of costumed pups and the crowning of the King and Queen made for a heartwarming spectacle. Our family also took part in the Kinder Area activities, where the kids played games, made paper German Alpine hats, and painted pumpkins & their faces.
Little kids could lift the pumpkins and earn a free Potosi Root Beer.
I wish I would have participated in the Beer Stein Endurance Contest. I would have been interested to see how I fared in this test of strength. Attendees also enjoyed a local Cornhole Tournament. Between the live music from the "Dave Austen Band" and "Boogie Monster Band," the festive atmosphere kept everyone energized throughout the day and into the evening for Oktoberfest after dark.
With delicious German beers, festive outfits, loads of dachshunds, and some killer polka, Galena Oktoberfest was an amazing celebration of heritage and fun. Plus, 100% of the proceeds for this event go to charity. We had a blast and can’t wait to return next year! Check out what you missed this year!
