It's 2024 and just like many of the past seasons, the offense for the Iowa Hawkeye football team is under fire. More specifically the passing game. Quarterback play has not been a strength at Iowa for many seasons now. The transfer of former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara was seen at the time as a huge step in the right direction. Now, many are calling for him to be benched. It leads me to ask you this question. When was the last time an Iowa quarterback threw for 300 or more yards in a single game?

Iowa has a history of great quarterbacks. Players that could get the ball downfield in a hurry. Names like Chuck Long, Brad Banks, Chuck Hartlieb, Drew Tate, and Ricki Stanzi. Quarterbacks who threw for 300 yards fairly regularly. But right now, the Iowa football program leads the Power 4 conferences in most consecutive games without a 300-yard passer.

The last Iowa quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in a game was Nate Stanley in 2019. Yes, FIVE seasons ago Hawkeye fans. On November 23, 2019, Iowa played Illinois. Stanely threw for 308 yards in the Hawkeye victory. No other Iowa quarterback has hit 300 yards since.

McNamara hasn't been close to 300 yards in 2024. In fact, the Iowa QB has broken 200 yards passing this season! Iowa football isn't known for its aerial passing attack. It's about running the football. A strong offensive line. A stout defense. But without at least the threat of strong quarterback play none of that works. It is why so many Iowa fans want to see backup QB and former Northwestern starter Brendan Sullivan. Iowa hosts the Wildcats in Iowa City on Saturday.
