Iowa’s Best Pizza Place Has Been Around for Over 40 Years
Craving some delicious pizza? You might want to take a trip to Ames!
Back in May, Reader's Digest published a list of 50 amazing pizza places across America. The article reads:
"We’ve done the detective work to find the best pizza in every state, using a combination of local knowledge, sales figures, rave reviews, and simply following our noses."
Here in Iowa, the top pizza place is one that I've never heard of before: Great Plains Sauce and Dough Co.
Located at 129 Main Street in Ames, Great Plains Sauce and Dough Co. first opened its doors in May of 1979. A lot of pizza restaurants will offer two or three different types of crust, but Great Plains offers SIX! There are three thin crust options: the classic Sam's Recipe (white), the Thin Denver (whole wheat), and Idaho Style (potato flour). And for thick crust, there's Denver Style (their most popular crust), New Orleans Style (white), and Oat Style (oat flour). Pizza come in 10'', 12", and 14", but they also offer pizza by the slice during lunch hours Monday through Saturday. Oh, and they have heart-shaped pizzas that are available year-round!
As far as toppings go, Great Plains has four specialty pizzas. There's the Great Plains Taco Pizza, the Herbivore's Delight, The Prairie Special, and the Buffalo, which is topped with pepperoni, pork sausage, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, and black olives. If you prefer to build your own pizza, that is also an option. Other menu items include sandwiches, salads, garlic cheese bread, cinnamon sticks, and cookies.
Another cool thing about Great Plains is that they are open every day of the year, with only two exceptions: Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. They're even open on Christmas Eve, but they close early at 2:30 p.m.
Great Plains Sauce and Dough Co. is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can check out the full menu HERE.
