After two years in business, a Downtown Cedar Rapids restaurant has shut down. Barrel House is now officially closed.

Barrel House opened its Downtown Cedar Rapids location back in May of 2022 in the former La Cantina at the corner 1st Ave and 2nd St SE. It arrived just a few months after the location in Marion opened at 295 Tower Terrace Rd, which was the first Barrel House here in the Corridor.

After noticing that the signage outside the restaurant had been removed, I reached out to Barrel House on Facebook to ask about the closure. Here is the response that they provided:

"To Cedar Rapids friends and Guests,

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the incredible support you have shown the Barrel House restaurant over the past three years. Being a part of the Downtown community has been a wonderful experience, and we are grateful for all the memories and friendships we've made here. After much consideration, we have decided not to renew our lease. This decision was not made lightly, and it comes with mixed emotions as we reflect on the success and joy this location has brought us. We want to extend our deepest thanks to all our guests and friends who made this journey so special. The resources from our Cedar Rapids location will be used to continue improving our other locations in Coralville and Marion, Iowa. We hope to see you at one of these spots soon and continue serving you with the same dedication and passion. We remain committed to providing food that lifts your spirits. Thank you once again for your support and understanding.

Sincerely, The Barrel House Team"

The good news is that there are still several other Barrel House locations that remain open here in Eastern Iowa, including two in the Corridor:

  • 3230 Redhawk St, Coralville
  • 295 Tower Terrace Rd, Marion
  • 211 E 2nd St, Davenport
  • 5141 Utica Ridge Rd, Davenport
  • 299 Main St, Dubuque
