Watch the Rehearsal of Metallica and Lady Gaga’s Grammy Performance With Working Mics
A problem with James Hetfield‘s microphone marred Metallica‘s duet with Lady Gaga at last month’s Grammy Awards telecast. Now, the world can see how it was supposed to have gone, because Metallica and Gaga have uploaded the video from the rehearsal of “Moth Into Flame.”
Metallica called the clip “How It SHOULD Have Sounded,” and you can see them perform in front of a relatively small group of people at the Staples Center above. Everything seen on the Grammys is there, from the flames to Gaga’s stage dive. The difference is that Hetfield’s vocals are audible throughout.
A couple of weeks after the Grammys, producer Ken Erlich apologized for the mishap, adding that he looked into what happened. “My guys say that the mic cable was connected,” he said, before positing the theory that “one of the extras accidentally kicked out the cable that went to the mic.”
While such things can happen, especially during a live television broadcast where so much is taking place at once, Hetfield was reportedly furious with the glitch, kicking over the mic stand and tossing his guitar to his roadie. “I haven’t seen him like that in 20 years,” drummer Lars Ulrich said. “He was livid. I mean, he’s aged really well and he’s a pretty chill guy, but the first five or 10 minutes in that dressing room was not a lot of fun.”
