Jack Black Calls on Hollywood to Continue Badmouthing Donald Trump at Oscars
— Chris Gardner (@chrissgardner) February 24, 2017
Black said at the Songs for Cinema benefit held by Artists for Peace and Justice last night (February 23) that Meryl Streep was exceedingly brave for standing up to Trump with a powerful Golden Globes speech she delivered in January. And if Hollywood wants to be on the right side of history, he said filmmakers and actors should follow suit at the next show.
“Is Meryl Streep in the audience tonight?” he asked the crowd. “I just hope she wins the Oscar and talks some more s— about that a–hole.”
Black also said that political commentary at awards shows is not meaningless, and that impassioned speeches can have real impact.
“A lot of people say, ‘Oh that’s just liberals…patting themselves on the back.’ I don’t agree,” he said. “I thought it took balls. I thought [Streep] was very brave. I was very inspired by it. To get up there and tell the truth about the President of the United States in front of a billion people — that takes courage and is very inspiring.”

Streep criticized Trump in her January 8 speech for fueling his campaign with hate speech, especially Trump’s mocking of a disabled reporter.
“This instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”
