At Cannes on Friday May 13, legendary American soul singer Dionne Warwick made the announcement that a biopic based on her life was in development and set to move into production in the fall. It was revealed that LeToya Luckett, one of the founding members of Destiny's Child, would portray her in the film, while Lady Gaga would play British artist Cilla Black, Warwick's real-life "arch-nemesis" and music industry rival. A poster for Dionne was unveiled at the event, with the "Born This Way" singer's name splashed across the top alongside Luckett's.

The casting news made headlines, first for the story initially breaking and then once more hours later, when Gaga's PR issued a statement denying that the pop star was involved whatsoever with the movie. "Lady Gaga is not attached and will not appear in the project," her publicist told Variety. "Reports of Gaga starring in the project are false."

Later in the afternoon, adding to the confusion, Variety spoke directly to Warwick following Gaga's denial. The iconic performer insisted that the casting news was indeed true, and that the error was on behalf of Gaga's publicity team, Rogers and Cowan.

"Actually, it’s just a little glitch. It will be corrected very soon, and everybody who retracted will have to retract again," Warwick assured the entertainment site. "It wasn’t [Gaga] that issued the statement. It was her PR people. It’s like everything else: The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. It becomes a problem. When they start talking to each other, it’s going to make a difference."

Warwick also admitted that Gaga hadn't officially signed a contract yet and while she hadn't personally been in contact with the American Horror Story actress, she had been speaking with the artist's management. "We finally have gotten texts and everything from everybody saying we’ll get it straightened out."

However, neither Gaga nor her team have yet to issue a retraction as of May 14, and when Variety further pressed Warwick about the casting, the "Walk On By" songstress seemed to relent somewhat.

"As far as I know, yes," she said. "And if she's not, somebody else will be. It’s that simple... It isn’t starring Gaga. It’s starring LeToya Luckett. It’s about Dionne Warwick, not Lady Gaga, okay?"
